Asbestos control will now become the responsibility of the Northern Territory Government following a motion to include the issue in the Public and Environmental Health Act passed the 2017 NT ALP conference.
NT Health Minister Natasha Fyles said the government acknowledged the Territory communities and workers were “rightfully concerned about asbestos issues”.
“The Northern Territory Government takes the asbestos issues seriously and will consider all of the concerns raised at this weekend’s Labor conference,” she said.
“NT WorkSafe isn’t involved in the physical clean-up of asbestos, but they are charged with ensuring high standards are maintained and ensuring businesses, workplaces and other organisations comply with their obligations under the law.”
CFMEU organizer Roley Cummins following the motion’s success wants to sit down and come up with the plan along with representatives from the NT Labor Government.
