Australia’s first whole-of-government Drones Strategy to be implemented

The Queensland Government will be implementing Australia’s first whole-of-government Drones Strategy to address the business opportunities and regulatory challenges for the industry.

A consultation paper on the future of drone technology in Queensland was released by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk during the inaugural World of Drones Congress in Brisbane.

All Queenslanders are encouraged to have their say on the Queensland Drones Strategy Consultation Paper, to help direct future policy.

“My Government wants to take drone technologies to the next level and to see Queensland become a world leader in drone investment, research, and development,” the Premier said.

“Our highly skilled workforce, world-class research and development capabilities, technical expertise and Advance Queensland initiative has already put us in a very strong position, but to achieve this vision we need to work together.

“Our whole-of-government Drones Strategy will be the first of its kind in Australia and will help to ensure we have the right policies and programs in place to back future technologies and create jobs.

“To ensure we get it right, we need everyone to have their say – business, industry, research and the community.

“We need to ensure industry can thrive, our research and development opportunities are maximized, our rights are protected and investment continues to flow into Queensland.”

Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy Leanne Enoch said the Congress provided a forum for all.

“For the first time ever, the inaugural World of Drones Congress will provide an international forum for everyone concerned with drones – from businesses to governments, investors to enthusiasts,” said Ms. Enoch.

“It will provide an ideal platform for business matching, industry development, and commercialization and will position Queensland as an attractive investment destination.”

The World of Drones Congress will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 31 August and 2 September 2017.

A workshop was conducted this week to understand how drones have impacted workplace safety. Speakers described how drones are being used to improve safety, getting them to do some of the dirty jobs, in and out of the way places, in extreme weather, away from medical care and in areas where transport and communication are problematic (read SafetyCulture report).
