Boy dies after ATV rolls near Nowra

A 10-year-old boy has died after the ATV he was driving rolled on private property near Nowra Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to a property on Devitts Road at Meroo Meadow, about 15 km north of Nowra, just after 11am.

Police said the ATV was being driven by the 10-year-old boy, with a 19-year-old male passenger, when it lost control and flipped.

Witnesses were able to free the boy and treat him until paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene.

The passenger was treated for shock and taken to Shoalhaven District Hospital.

In the eight years from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2018, there were 128 quad bike fatalities in Australia, Safe Work Australia figures show.  About 11% (14 fatalities) were children aged 11 years or under.
