Man’s leg severed in workplace incident at Townsville airport

A man has lost his leg in a workplace incident at a north Queensland airport.

The 56-year-old man was reportedly struck by a piece of machinery that fell from a truck on Wednesday evening.

The man was working on the runway at Townsville Airport when he was injured, according to the Brisbane Times.

He was transported to Townsville Hospital in a serious condition.

The Australian Defence Force issued a statement, saying a member of the RAAF had been injured in a work-related incident.

“A Royal Australian Air Force member was injured while on duty at RAAF Base Townsville on the evening of Wednesday 16 August 2017,” the ADF said.

“The Air Force member’s colleagues provided immediate first aid.

“The Queensland Police Service and Queensland Ambulance Service attended the site and the member was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.”

“Defence will work with Comcare to investigate the incident.
