A new draft standard for installation of battery energy systems(BESS), DR AS/NZS 5139:2017 Electrical installations – Safety of battery systems has been released by Standards Australia.
The draft standards for use with power conversion equipment covers general installation and safety requirements for BESS, where battery system is installed and connected with power conversion equipment to supply electric power to other parts of an electrical installation. It applies to on-site built BESS units and pre-assembled integrated BESS units.
The hazards associated with BESS as well as installation methods that eliminate or minimize these hazards.
When incorrectly installed, these battery systems can pose serious safety risks to the installer or the homeowner.
The draft document will be amended by the Standards Australia committee based on feedback from industry and other stakeholders. The draft standard is open for comment until 15 August 2017.
