A new code of Practice for managing risks in stevedoring can now be downloaded.
‘Managing Risks in stevedoring’ has been developed by Safe Work Australia to address the high rate of accidents and injuries in the stevedoring industry. The rate of serious incidents in the industry is more than three times the average rate for all industries.
Stevedoring involves activities that are directly connected with loading or unloading a ship’s cargo, stacking and storing cargo on a wharf and receiving and delivering cargo within a terminal or facility.
With the code in place, practical guidance on complying with different duties under the work health and safety laws will be provided to businesses to improve their safety standards.
The new code commenced in NSW on 15 December.
