A pilot was taken to a hospital Tuesday night after his light plane crashed in the Lower Hunter Valley.

Police said the pilot noticed engine problems shortly after take-off and attempted to turn around.

The pilot was able to land the plane on its belly in a paddock adjacent to Luskintyre Airfield in Maitland at about 7pm.

He sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for observation.

The 66-year-old man was the sole occupant of the plane.
