A safety alert issued by Safe Work NSW reminds people who handle packs of glass sheets not to rely on the packaging to support the contents when the package is being lifted or opened.
The safety alert follows an incident in which a glazier was fatally injured while using an overhead crane to move packaged sheets of glass in December 2016. Failure of the packaging was a contributing factor to the fatal incident.
According to the NSW safety watchdog, people who handle packs of glass sheets should consult with their supplier regarding the design and construction of the packaging.
They should also obtain information on whether the packaging has been designed and constructed to support its contents, and how the packs should be lifted and opened.
Additional information on hazards and risks when working with glass is available on Safe Work NSW website.
